Ginseng grows in the wild in several regions of eastern Asia: Manchuria, China, Japan, Korea, East Russia. The plant thrives in dark, damp, wooded and elevated locations. It is commonly found on the edges of ravines and rocks. The root is the part of the Ginseng plant which is used; it is extremely hard and dense, and never spongy.
As a medicinal plant, Ginseng has the most ancient and most respected reputation. It has been part of the traditional Chinese Pharmacopoeia for over 2,000 years. Ginseng is the unrivalled 'elixir of youth'. It is used daily at maintenance dose, apparently to prolong the life of elderly people and to help younger individuals through temporary periods of weariness. It is the best known plant of the adaptogenics.
The genus name Panax comes from the Greek words Pan, meaning 'all', and Akos, which is translated as 'remedy'.
The oily extract of ginseng roots contains some terpenoids with soothing and antibacterial properties, an ideal ingredient for sportspeople to take care of their skin!
