Originated from South America, Chenopodium quinoa is called pseudocereal due to its composition close to cereals. Quinoa is an important food in Andean region and is cultivated since more than 5000 years. This extremophilic plant grows in arid, cold and windy regions with poor, often salty, soil. Indeed, it derives its extraordinary nutritive qualities from its hardiness.
In the province of Altiplano live the Kallawayas. These nomads practice empirical medicine using their in-depth knowledge of regional plants and white magic to heal local people. These healers use the quinoa to make llikta, a paste used to soothe inflammations and itches. Richer in essential amino-acids, vitamins (B group, E) and minerals (Ca, K, P, Mg…) than cereals, quinoa is ideal to moisturise and nourish the skin. The content in saponins brings anti-inflammatory properties and soothes sensitive skin.
